Unitarian group denied tax status
By R.A. Dyer

AUSTIN - Unitarian Universalists have for decades presided over births, marriages and memorials. The church operates in every state, with more than 5,000 members in Texas alone.

But according to the office of Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, a Denison Unitarian church isn't really a religious organization -- at least for tax purposes. Its reasoning: the organization "does not have one system of belief."

Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

"I was surprised -- surprised and shocked -- because the Unitarian church in the United States has a very long history," said Althoff, who notes that father-and-son presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were both Unitarians.

Holy Cow.

The Quakers (esp. the liberal branch) would be another system that would be in trouble too, using that logic. I'm sure there are others.

Thank you. I like to ask you in particular because you find brilliant stuff worth sharing but you're also a somewhat private person. I try to remember and respect that.

I've known of similar things to happen on local and county levels, but there seems to be some hesitancy to pull such bullshit on a state-wide level--except maybe in Texas.

Rylander must be polishing up for her gubernatorial run. I'll have to see what I can do to protest.

Did she run for Comptroller with a promise to beat down the heathen, or has it simply been a recent development?

oddly, she's the self styled "sensible" rightwing alternative to our ridiculous governor. I notice that she's already lost this one in court to the Ethical Culture folks, so the U/U attack is just grandstanding to the religious right.

If you're moving to Texas, I recommend adding--or at least reading--[info]gurdonark, [info]plinko and [info]whitelinefever--all of them good people, good writers and residents of Texas.

thanks I'll look into their journals. very helpful of you! I'm in DC now and it is my general dilema (besides being sick at the moment) as to the future, and where I'll be moving. I'm not sure yet, Texas doesn't appeal very greatly to me, but to have my ENTIRE family in one place does seem good for my son. (i'm a single mom my son is 2) we'll see thanks for the connections though.

Yes, good luck to you.

I have a son, six years older than yours, who's with me a shade under half the time. It's . . . something.

indeed. My son's father lives outside the country so he doesn't see him. I'm all he's got and my family, so its a tough choice. we'll see...again thanks for the well wishes.
